Four Different Baltimore Pro Football Teams Have Won Championships

Winning the championship is the primary goal of any football team, or any sports team at all really. There is only one reason to go out and play and that is to win the championship. A championship season is not only rewarding to the players that duke it out on the field, but also to the fans that root them on. Cities and regions should be very proud of their championship winning teams.

Baltimore is a great football town and professional football has been present there in one form or another for more than 60 years. Many people don’t know this, but four different professional football teams have won championships while representing the city of Baltimore.

The Baltimore Ravens – 2000

The last Baltimore team to win a league title in pro football was the team that currently represents the city in the NFL, the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens began as a franchise in 1996, having been active as the Cleveland Browns the previous year. They had a few tough years, but in 2000 everything came together behind a strong running game and an out of this world defense. They ended up defeating the New York Giants 34-7 in Super Bowl XXXV.

The Baltimore Colts – 1958, 1959, and 1970

The Baltimore Colts won championships three times. In 1958, they defeated the New York Giants for the NFL title in what many would refer to as the greatest game ever played. After trailing most of the 1959 title game, the Colts would eventually score 24 unanswered points and defeat the Giants in a rematch of the previous year’s championship game by the score of 31-16. The Colts won their third league title in 1970 when they beat the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl V by the score of 27-17. Technically, the Colts have a fourth title as they were champions of the NFL in 1968, but went on to lose Super Bowl III to the New York Jets of the American Football League before the two leagues merged.

The Baltimore Stars – 1985

The Stars franchise had played the first two seasons of their time in the USFL in the city of Philadelphia. The team was moved to Baltimore for 1985 and though they weren’t as successful as they had been in the past, they were able to make it into the playoffs. The magic was still there though and they marched through the post season and would win the last championship game in USFL history by defeating the Oakland Invaders.

The Baltimore Stallions – 1995

The Canadian Football League expanded into the United States in the mid 1990’s, and one of the cities that got a team was Baltimore. In 1995, their second season, the Baltimore Stallions not only won their division, but they became the first team based in America to win the Grey Cup as champions of the Canadian Football League. The team was gone the next year as they were moved to Montreal and renamed the Allouettes.

Football Spread Offense

Today I want to talk with Head Coach Bill Renner and his Spread Offense which he calls: 5-Wide Attack Spread Offense

Article 1 – For an offense, nothing is more frustrating than having a defense that Attacks you to the point that you are passive, defensive, and worried about not being able to get points or move the ball. They have succeeded in making your offense take on a defensive mind set of «just don’t lose the game» or «we will wait for a good opportunity».

Well, the 5 Wide Attack Offense’s mission is to never allow that mind set to become prevalent. In fact, the 5 Wide Attack Offense reverses that mind set and puts the defense in the passive, defensive mode and worries if they can stop it.

HOW does it do this? With formations that limit the defensive alignment so you can practice against exactly what you will see on game day. With a no huddle system that makes the defense play at your tempo. With offense tempo changes that keep the defense from being able to lock in on your offense. With 5 receivers in every pass play and 4 receivers on every run play which disguises their pass run read of your offense.

Good defenses are programmed to react and not think. The 5 Wide Attack Offense does not allow them to ever get in a reacting state, it always keeps them thinking. Thinking defenses are slow defenses which become uncertain defenses who then become targets for your Attack offense. Once you have them confused, doubt creeps in and then the points roll up on the scoreboard.

Instilling the element of doubt in a defense is your chief weapon against an aggressive defense. Never be without the tools to create this doubt so you can score as many points as necessary to win. The 5 Wide Attack Offense will give you those tools!

Fantasy Football in the 1980’s

I started playing Fantasy Football in 1987 I started 23 years ago when I was 10. The landscape has changed dramatically since then.

It all started when my dad had the opportunity to join a dynasty league. Two teams had not renewed and there was to be a draft to split up their players. My dad, older brother Ben and myself went to his office to conduct the draft over the phone with the other new owner. The rookies for that year had already been drafted so I remember the big prize was Vinny Testaverde. The other QB’s of note were Warren Moon and Randall Cunningham. I know I felt nervous because the stakes seemed so high. We did a coin flip over the phone which seemed to require an incredible level of trust through the eyes of a 10 year old boy. We lost the coin flip and drafted 2nd and 3rd. Testaverde went first and we eventually got both Moon and Cunningham. It worked out well for us and I have always had an affinity for Cunningham because of that early connection to him.

After that draft the three of us were totally hooked. So much so we organized another league for that same season so we could each manage our own team. It was a league that redrafted every year. Ben, my Dad and I each had our own team. I never felt so much responsibility having control of my own fantasy team. The first draft was held at our house. My dad fronted our buy in of $10 or $20. I don’t remember how much but it seemed like a lot at the time. The other players were all adults except for one guy who brought his two sons; the older of which had his own team and the younger shared with his dad. Clearly, my dad had a lot of faith in me.

To prepare for the draft my dad bought Cliff Charpentier’s Fantasy Football Digest 1987. It was a full 200+page book. It had a solid color for the front and no flashy pictures. This book was incredible to me. There was so much to learn. It was laid out by position and in the various scoring methods. We were the playing basic scoring method. Which awarded 4 points for thrown TD’s, 6 points for rushing and receiving TDs, 3 points for field goals and 1 point for extra points. That was it. No points were awarded for yards. It seems barbaric now but this was how we played and we loved it. The book was laid out by position with rankings that had tiers. Starting with the «Best of the best» and going down from there. I remember thinking this was like a text book and not to be questioned. I had one resource and I studied it hard. I remember doing countless mock drafts on my own. We did not determine draft position until the night of the draft which made preparing infinitely more difficult.

The night of the drafts were always incredibly exciting for me. The first couple years were conducted at our house and then it moved to a different owner’s business conference room which seemed extremely official. Draft position was determined by dealing cards Ace through 9. The drama was incredible. There were pretzel sticks to be eaten like cigars and this would be the first time I had ever seen beer in my house. It was whole new world to me. It was about as much fun as preteen boy could handle.

Sundays had a whole new excitement to them. Watching the games was torture, we got 1 maybe two games at noon and of course we had no DVR. So you were at the whim of the ticker across the top of the screen and the very rare game break to gauge how you were doing. The halftime recaps were a whirlwind of information to track. I can remember begging the announcers «How did they score the third TD?» This would go on for both the Noon and 3:00 games and then we had to wait the agonizing couple hours until NFL Primetime which also launched in 1987. I have so many memories of one of my fantasy players running across the screen and hearing Chris Berman shouting «Rumbling stumbling TOUCHDOWN!!!!» The high was amazing. In some ways I miss those days. With today’s instant information that anticipation is never able to build like it did back then.

Ben and my dad took on the duties of commissioner. This was a ton of work. They learned to use a spreadsheet on our green screen Apple IIC. Lineups were called in to our house phone Saturday nights or Sunday morning with last minute calls coming in just before noon. I do remember these calls being highly annoying to my sister who could not possibly comprehend their level of importance. Official results had to wait for the box scores in the Monday morning paper. All of the sudden I was extremely excited about the newspaper and so glad we had morning delivery. I was one of the only kids in grade school who would go to the library and venture over the newspaper section. I would pour over the box scores to plan my drop and adds.

After Monday night’s game the results would be entered in the spreadsheet and printed off. We would mail them out to the rest of the league the following day. It is a testament to how much fun fantasy football is that even with what now seems like such a crude way of receiving and distributing data that we gladly went through it to play. You certainly had to be more dedicated then to have a league that endured due to the shear about of work required.

I have nothing but fond memories of playing fantasy football in the 80’s and early 90’s. I am glad it has become more accessible to the masses and has reached the popularity it is at today. There is a little piece of me though that misses waiting through the commercial breaks hoping to hear Chris Berman scream like only he can, «The Nigerian Nightmare bulldozes his way to the end zone».

Soft Hands Training: How To Catch Every Ball

He was born with soft hands. The so-called experts want you to believe this. It is not the truth. Anyone who is willing to follow my simple instructions can develop soft hands and become more than proficient at catching footballs.

There are three options available when preparing to catch a football with your hands. The first option, move your hands toward the football. This is the worst of the three options. When you move your hands toward a fast-moving football, you turn your hands into a virtual baseball bat. More than likely you will, at contact, repel the oncoming football and miss the catch.

The second option is to keep your hands still. It is not quite as bad as option one, but it still sets up a situation where your hands act like a backboard that could easily repel the football. Most football players catch this way. Teaching them to use their fingertips help, but it is not the best solution to the problem.

The third option, the one I recommend and seems to be instinctively used by most successful wide receivers who have been deemed to have «soft hands». It is to move your hands slightly backwards, about a thumb to a middle fingers length, right before the ball makes contact with your hands. You create a basket like effect. For a short period of time your hands match the velocity of the football, in the same direction of course, and then slow down to secure the catch. It creates less chance for repelling the football and missing catches.

The motion is similar to those of a tennis player when an errant ball comes his way. He simply reaches out with his racket and catches the ball. It seems like the ball just sticks, almost magnetically, to the racket. However, it is the rapid acceleration and then deceleration of the hands that makes it work.

Wide receivers, grab an old tennis racket and a tennis ball. Start by holding the tennis racket in your dominant hand and tossing the tennis ball up in the air with your non-dominant hand. Once the ball bounces, point the head of the racket toward the ball so it will potentially make contact with the strings on that end. Right before it makes contact, rapidly accelerate the decelerate the racket and bring it to a horizontal position to cradle the ball, and thus catching the ball. After you have mastered the bounce, try throwing the ball in the air and catching it out of the air with the racket using the same technique. Once you master this technique you will be on your way to being a better receiver.

Law 11 – The Most Controversial Law in Football

The most controversial law in the game of football is that which deals with off-side. It is highly technical, radical and extremely difficult to implement but obviously interesting when properly applied in a match situation. Center referees and their assistants are usually encouraged to exhibit awareness in the application of this very sensitive and controversial law.

One unique thing about the off-side rule, is the fact that world governing body-FIFA usually changes the rules periodically and also confer on the assistant referee the power to rule a player who is in an off-side position of play. The center referee following the determination of his assistant can make the final decision to stop the game.

Thus the need for the assistant referees to be totally focused throughout the duration of the game cannot be compromised as a lack of concentration can prove very costly. A 100% surety and attempt to be in active play by an attacker directly implies the assistant referee will flag for off-side positional play. To flag for an off-side position of play, two conditions are involved:

Position and activity/position without activity
The fact that an opposing player is in the opponent half of the field does not necessarily constitute an off-side position of play. The active participation of the player is very important when making a call. The guilty player must have an intention to interfere with play before he is punished for off-side position of play.

The assistant referee must therefore ensure that before the flag is raised, he/she must be absolutely sure that the player is:

  • involved in active play
  • interfering with an opponent
  • seeking to gain undue advantage by being in that position

FIFA laws of the game normally undergoes review periodically hence the need for referees and their assistant to familiarize themselves with the current additional rules. The controversy surrounding this rule made FIFA and some Football Association to sanction the use of a fifth referee who usually stands by the goal line during matches.

Exceptions to the rule
A player cannot be adjudged to be in an off-side position of play when he/she receives the ball directly from:

  • a throw-in
  • a goal kick

Physical and mental fitness is required among referees to ensure that one is not too far from the actual position of play. When a referee is not physically or mentally fit, the tendency to commit error in flagging becomes inevitable.

In conclusion, a player cannot be said to be in an off-side position of play if he/she is not interfering with play. This means that it is not an offense in itself to be in an off-side position. A call is made by the assistant referee when a player is nearer to his opponents’ goal line than both the ball and the 2nd but last opponent.

Indianapolis Semi-Pro Football Team Wins National Championship

The Hoosier Hurricanes invaded Homestead, Florida for last weekend’s 4th annual Minor League Football News (MLFN) Super Football Weekend strong winded and left with reign.

In a game dominated by defense, the Hurricanes hammered the Carolina Express 41-0 to win MLFN’s AA National Championship.

«To reach this point so quickly is incredible,» said Hurricanes head coach John Starlin. «I really feel like a proud father to all of those guys.»

While the ‘Canes’ offense was strong, the play of their defense was dominant. The ‘Canes forced eight turnovers and controlled the Express’ offense, which towered over them in size and power. Early in the contest, it looked like the Express were going to use their Power I offensive attack to run right down the throat of the ‘Canes’ defense. When the Express were forced to throw, however, the speedy Hurricane secondary was able to take the game away. The first of four Express interceptions was thrown on that opening drive, and the Hurricanes never looked back.

«They were a tough team to scout, but I really think they underestimated our speed,» said Starlin. «Other coaches from their league were able to help me out as far as scouting, but I knew as solid as our defense was that we could play with anybody.»

Staying with the defensive theme of the game, linebacker Deon Smith was awarded the game’s MVP for his 12 tackle performance. He also intercepted a pass and forced a fumble.

The AA national title was the perfect end to a season that was already storybook for the Indianapolis squad, founded by co-owners Starlin, David Day, and NFL wide receiver Reggie Wayne. In their first year of existence, the Hurricanes were awarded Best New Team in the Midwest by MLFN after finishing 13-1 in the Ohio Valley Football League (OVFL). Their OVFL season finished with a Super Bowl victory over the Charlotte (MI) Roughriders, 21-0.

«This has really been a dream season for us,» said Starlin.

Starlin’s players have also won numerous accolades from MLFN. Four ‘Canes were honored with Midwest All-American status: Derrick Ellis was an honorable mention Midwest All-American at running back, wide receiver Scott Penick made second team Midwest All-American, and Corey Crumpton and Charles Avant were first and second team at defensive back, respectively.

Ellis, a former «Mr. Indiana» while playing running back in high school, was also named Running Back of the Year in the Midwest Region by MLFN.

The Hurricanes will return to the OVFL next season and compete to become the first ever back-to-back champion in league history, a feat no team has accomplished in 40 years of competition.

«We are trying to develop something special here,» said Starlin.

It certainly looks like the Hurricanes are off to a roaring start.

How To Train Football Players And Using The Right Equipment

When training football players to become proficient and successful, it is necessary for coaches to use a variety of football training equipment. Players must be trained to prepare their bodies for the challenges on the field. There are many different positions on the field and a coach must be prepared for the seasons with the correct equipment at the best prices. Every position requires a different skill set which requires specific football equipment and by identifying the most important pieces of equipment for each position, a coach can increase their chances of fostering a better practice time and maximizing player ability.

Whether you will be playing offense or defense, the harder you train the better the results on the field. Training hard does not just entail constant and arduous scrimmaging. Exercising requires finding the proper football training equipment to prepare you and your team for a peak performance well into the depths of the fourth quarter.

Now, what is some of best football training equipment that will help you keep the body of your players ready for their challenges? In this article, we will list some of what is necessary to put together a winning team. Here you will find the equipment your team needs to acquire. When practicing for the game, it is always helpful to simulate real game situations. We will be discussing some of the football training equipment needed to accomplish this tough feat.

During practice, some good equipment to use is football cones, hurdles, and agility ladders. This equipment is great for training multiple lateral movements. Speed players need to be agile and capable of hurdling opponents. Players run through agility ladders and over hurdles to learn how to increase speed while high stepping and keeping their legs moving forward. These abilities are necessary for building successful players and an accomplished team.

Football is a game of acceleration, and a team that gains 5 yards a down will always score. Speed parachutes and speed sleds help strengthen player’s legs and increase their acceleration.

Dummies and sleds are good equipment for strength training for offensive and defensive players. Dummies can be used for many types of drills, and they come in many different shapes and colors. When the dummy is attached to a blocking sled they can be used in blocking drills and tackling drills. You can also use dummies to practice angled run blocking and driving dummies backward to open holes for runners. For practicing tackling a coach can hold a handheld dummy or you can use a pop-up dummy.

Lineman chutes are good for training players on how to stay low and keep proper head position and body form when blocking and tackling.

Kicking cages are also a good training device to help place kickers to kick long field goals.

Football players need to be trained properly in order for a coach to have success on the field. This equipment will simulate the proper situation for the desired performance in the players. Dummies, Sleds, Lineman chutes, kicking cages, agility ladders, parachutes, and speed sleds are all vital to a winning football team.
