NFL Football – What Better Way to Spend a Sunday Afternoon?

For those of you who are already football fans, you know what I’m talking about. What better way to spend 3 hours of your Sunday than watching your favorite team on TV? Or maybe more, if you catch the other games. What else does someone possibly have to do on a Sunday? Clean the garage? Go to the mall? I think not. Let’s face it, you worked hard all week; all you want to do is sit back, relax and enjoy the game. Or games.

For those of you who are not currently fans and are not following this routine, my question to you is WHY NOT?? There is no other game quite like football. Every week, stadiums across the country, from one coast to the other are filled to capacity; millions of fans are glued to their TV’s watching the game. Every year, people gear up for the Super Bowl, the biggest party of the year. So, there must be something to this game, right?

Maybe you’ve tried watching games and just don’t understand it. Let’s face it, if you don’t understand something, you’re probably not going to enjoy it very much, and football is no exception. But millions of others have learned the game, so why not you?

Maybe you don’t like the violence. Football is, by its nature a violent game. But, that’s what draws so many people to it. It’s not for the meek. But there is much more to football than its violent nature. In no other professional sport do you see 300 lb + athletes run like deer. And in no other sport do you see such precision, with 11 teammates working together like a well oiled machine.

Or maybe you’re just not a sports fan. If that’s the case, now’s the time to become one! I’ve been a self admitted «sports nut» my whole life, following baseball, basketball, hockey and football. Trust me when I tell you, there is no game like football. Just give it a chance!

Bottom line, if you aren’t watching football, for whatever the reason, now’s the time to start! Join the crowd and get ready for some NFL action!

If you need some assistance, check out «It’s Football, Not Rocket Science!» my beginner’s guide to professional football, available at www.learnprofootball.com

Best of luck.

Post NFL Draft Rookie Rankings – Dynasty Fantasy Football

As is usually the case, the NFL draft can have a huge impact on the fantasy football fortunes of the rookies that are chosen. In dynasty leagues it’s all about the rookie draft. Many rookie drafts begin immediately after the NFL draft ends, some wait until later in OTAs, training camp or pre-season in order to provide the most opportunity to evaluate player situations. For those that draft quickly, it’s important to have opinions on the value of these rookies so with that in mind, here is my post-draft rookie top 12 rankings. This represents the first round in most rookie drafts. Let’s get right to it:

  1. Todd Gurley (STL) – Gurley was a surprise pick by the Rams, but it makes a lot of sense. Jeff Fisher is a run-minded coach and Gurley can carry the load much better than Tre Mason over the long term. Over the short-term, don’t be surprised to see Tre Mason start the year as the lead dog and still share carries in the second half of the year. As long as you’re thinking long-term, Gurley is your man.
  2. Amari Cooper (OAK) – Cooper finds himself in a pretty darn good situation. Solid young QB in Derek Carr, absolutely no competition for the WR1 gig, though that also could impact him with a lot of double teaming. There is no reason here to believe Cooper won’t grow into the lead role in year 1. In PPR leagues, you can probably swap Cooper for Gurley and feel pretty good about it.
  3. Kevin White (CHI) – Chicago has a lot of transition going on, so this pick is not without some risk. Cutler is a solid QB but obviously won’t be there for long. John Fox is not known as an offensive coach, though he lit it up with Peyton Manning in Denver. I just don’t think this offense will have the same fire power. That said, Alshon Jeffrey will make it hard for defenses to focus on White, which will help him. At the end of the day, his talent wins out here to put him in this slot.
  4. Melvin Gordon (SD) – San Diego traded up to get Gordon and I have to say I love where he landed. While there are decent RBs already on the roster, there is no doubt that both A) Gordon is more talented than all of them and B) San Diego wanted him very badly. I think this makes a terrific fantasy football scenario that could put Gordon as the #1 producing rookie running back in the 2016 season.
  5. DeVante Parker (MIA) – Another perfect fit. The Dolphins have quietly cobbled together one of the best young receiver corps in the NFL. Parker is the perfect X split end to Kenny Stills Z receiver and Jarvis Landry’s Y slot receiver. Add in Jordan Cameron and you’ve got yourself some weapons. Tannehill is developing in to a quality starter which makes this situation all the better. The only risk here is that in the last few years the Fins receivers really didn’t produce much. That should change going forward.
  6. Breshad Perriman (BAL) – Baltimore was in dire need for a WR infusion and got it in the first round with Perriman. Perriman was one of those guys that was on the outer edge of the first round and will jump up now that the Ravens have made this commitment. What’s not to like here, he has a mentor in Steve Smith, very little quality competition and a solid QB situation. He’ll need some time to grow into this role for sure, he’s not a finished product, but the upside is higher than is was pre-draft.
  7. Dorial Green-Beckham (TEN) – I would consider this point in the draft to be a break point. The first five are dynasty money IMO, Perriman has a very solid situation, here at #7 it starts to get a bit based on your taste and needs. DGB has incredible potential and has been placed in a good situation. Marcus Mariota will be his QB and as long as he develops, DGB develops with him. I’ve never been impressed with the other WRs on the Titans, so if he keeps his head straight, DGB can be an absolute steal at this point in the draft. That’s a big IF though…
  8. TJ Yeldon (JAX) – Another guys who, like Perriman, will fly up the post-NFL draft rookie rankings IMO. Yeldon, while not the best athlete at the combine, is good enough to be a three down back in the NFL and the Jaguars have drafted him to be that back. That’s good enough for me! With very little competition in this backfield and a solid group of young offensive players to build around, Yeldon could be a poor man’s Gordon or Gurley in this draft.
  9. Nelson Agholor (PHI) – In the end, Chip Kelley tried but could not trade up for Marcus Mariota, so he sat back and took Jeremy Maclin’s replacement instead. Virtually identical to Maclin in many ways (height, weight, speed), Agholor should fit right into Chip’s offense and be a quality fantasy player. Why, you ask, do you rank him below two guys that went later in the draft? Good question, one reason is talent, DGB and Yeldon are more talented than Agholor in their respective positions. Second, while being a receiver in Kelly’s offense is coveted, I’m not convinced Agholor will be the #1 receiver on this team, which to me, limits his upside. In PPR I’d probably put him ahead of Yeldon, but that’s it.
  10. Jameis Winston (TB) – Winston moves up into the first round on my board because of the weapons he has at his disposal. Mike Evans, Vincent Jackson, Austin Sefarian-Jenkins and now Kenny Bell. Winston and his immaturity is a risk no doubt, but so was Cam Newton and he provided fantasy ballers four straight top 5 fantasy seasons. I’m not 100% on it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Winston did the same thing.
  11. Tevin Coleman (ATL) – Coleman is a warrior. He played half his senior season on a broken foot and still had a 2,000 yard season. He comes into a situation where his only competition is Devonta Freeman. Now many will tell you that’s now competition but don’t believe it. This looks to me like a committee for at least the first year, while Colemen gets used to pass pro and the speed of the game. If he does well purely running the ball this year, look for him to take over in year 2.
  12. Devin Funchess (CAR) – This guy just sneaks into my top 12 in getting picked up by Carolina. Here’s the thing, if they play him at WR, which I think they will, then Cam Newton has the weapons to succeed. I think this offense has more potential than it’s shown in the last two years and with a healthy Cam, Kelvin Benjamin on one side, Funchess on the other, Olsen in the middle and Stewart in the backfield, the pie can get a little bit bigger for everyone.

Coaching Youth Football – Offensive Line Cut Blocking

A unique style of offensive line blocking is called a chop, or cut. Over the years, a cut, or chop block has been called by some a «dirty» technique. A cut, or chop works great and if taught correct it can keep a dominating defender at bay. No cut, or chop should ever be tried with a vicious intent to hurt any player. I would get confirmation from the association’s rules that cut and chop blocking is allowed before I would teach it to any players.

A cut blocking technique is used by offensive linemen, and sometimes other blockers,by blocking legally below the waist (i.e., from the front of the defensive player) in an attempt to bring the defenders to ground, making them unable to pursue a running back for the short time needed for the back to find a gap in the defense. The technique is somewhat controversial, as it carries a risk of serious leg injuries to the blocked defenders.

The San Francisco 49ers of the 1980s and early in the 1990’s were famous for their cut technique(and leg-whipping blocking techniques, which is not legal), a maneuver that was ultimately used in the mid-90’s by the NFL’s Denver Broncos. The Denver Broncos gained a level of fame by using their cut-blocking style (often named a malicious play by other teams) which produced the NFL’s top rushing offense for over ten years, but likewise resulted in many defensive football opponents of the Broncos getting injured by the cut blocks. In a Monday Night Football game back in 2004, defensive tackle Tony Williams of the Cincinnati Bengals was injured for the year after a cut block (by the Broncos lineman George Foster), and in 2005, Jacksonville Jaguars defensive guard Paul Spicer was severely hurt on a cut block by Broncos lineman Matt Lepsis. In response to the complaints, in 2004 Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan explained to local reporters and showed them some NFL game film (only watched by and used by coaches) that demonstrated how just about all teams in the NFL use the cut-blocking technique.

As you can see from the above paragraph, there is a great controversy in the NFL regarding cut blocking, so please make sure if you do decide to teach cut blocking to your youth football team you use caution. It is important to show only safe, legal techniques for such a potential dangerous block. We use a simple, yet safe rule regarding chop blocks. Only if you are getting beat, and you can remain on all fours, you can crab block. Our coaches have all players drive, or crab on all fours into the defender.

Duke Blue Devils College Football Tickets

The Duke Blue Devils college football team has long been a source of pride for the athletics division, as well as for the students of Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Though Duke’s football team was first set up back in 1895, it was only formally established after World War I, when Duke’s Board of Trustees voted to lift the 25-year ban on football in the campus. Since then, the Duke Blue Devils has been making its presence strongly felt in the collegiate football scene. In fact, Duke’s football program has been consistently cited over the years as one of the most successful of all college football programs. It has also been cited for 12 years as one of the top-ranking schools which graduate nearly all of their football players, an achievement Duke is also proud to have for its players in the other sports.

The Blue Devils have been playing at the Wallace Wade Stadium in the Duke University campus since 1929. Once known as the Duke Stadium, it was renamed in 1967 after Wallace Wade, the legendary Hall of Famer and Blue Devils football team coach who steered the team to victory during his tenure from 1930-1950.

Important Moments And Accomplishments

The Duke Blue Devils football team has won a total of 17 conference titles, 10 of which were won under the current Atlantic Coast Conference. (ACC) The team won its last title in 1989; this which would place Duke as 4th among the 12-member ACC teams with the most number of championship titles.

It addition to these championships, Duke has also seen 53 of its players over the years become part of the prestigious College Football All-America Team.

Quarterbacks in the Current Roster

Currently, the team’s quarterbacks are composed of Zack Asack, Mike Capetto, Thaddeus Lewis, and Sean Renfree.

Recent News

Under the helm of Coach David Cutcliffe, (who has been the head coach of the Duke Blue Devils football team for a year now) the Blue Devils this season are vying for a shot, at least, for a bowl appearance. The team has long been hungry to make an appearance in any of the college bowl tournaments since it last had that chance in 1994. So far this season, with an even record of 4 wins and 4 losses, hopes are still high for the Dukes in attaining the dream of a national title which has eluded them for so long. As the rest of the regular season will be tough for the Dukes, the team is striving to fight the odds to get a crack for a slot in a college bowl appearance which many Blue Devil fans are eagerly watching and hoping would happen. As Cutcliffe reminded his team earlier this season, this is now the time they have to fight like crazy to stay alive. Any Blue Devil fan would not want to miss these crucial moments for the team and witness the way the fight to stay alive and make history once again.

A Woman’s True Confession: I Finally Understand the Male Obsession with Football

Football season is here, which means that for the next several weeks – 90% of the male population of the US will spend an enormous amount of their «free time» watching games on TV (the bigger the screen, the better), attending football games (Friday=high school, Saturday= college, Sunday & Monday=Pro), and of course every day of the week they will be moaning,

groaning or crowing about their Fantasy League, uh, excuse me, in most cases – make that Fantasy Leagues… because it seems you can’t join just one.

Now, I grew up in a female dominated home – 3 women (mom, myself and my sister) and one male (dad, unless you count the dog…but he tended to be loyal to the person with the food in hand), and I have to admit, we did tend to make Dad as miserable as possible about his «obsession» with football. We whined and fussed every time he tried to watch a game, and sooner or later he would usually give up and let us watch «girl stuff».

My first husband was never much of a sports fan, so for most of my adulthood, my exposure to football was minimal, but fast forward a few decades – new husband, new life…new lifestyle.

And suddenly I find myself in the midst of a VERY sports oriented family – with a particular emphasis on football. So, for the first time in my life, I found myself attending Friday night high school games, rooting for my stepson as he ran up and down the field, screaming at the refs even though I wasn’t always quite sure WHY I was screaming but hey! you do get caught up in the enthusiasm of the moment.

For 3 years, I never missed a game, through rain and snow, I bundled up and cheered the team on, sometimes to victory and sometimes to defeat. I grew to understand the game, and enjoyed being a fan more with every game. I clapped along as the team came to the home side after every victory and sang their fight song, and endured long, quiet rides home when they lost.

But – I never truly understood the «obsession» until my stepson’s last game in high school.

The game was over, the weather was cold and drizzly, the song was done, and the seniors walked back out on the field one last time, helmets in hand. They stood there, silently, exchanging hugs and pats on the back, and one by one, they knelt to one knee and just looked around, as the lights blinked out around the stadium.

The silence was deafening – and the emotion overpowering.

Most of these boys had played football together since the age of 9, practicing and playing as a team for long months every year, sharing bumps and bruises and injuries, big wins and bigger losses, developing a camaraderie that few women will ever experience.

And now suddenly – it was over. Most of the boys would never again don the pads and the uniform, never again be part of that team spirit. If you play baseball – you can play some form of it for the rest of your life, but football is over for most men with that last Friday night game in high school.

And so is born the obsession with all things football – it’s an ongoing quest to recapture even just a small piece of that team experience in high school, the closeness, the camaraderie that made it worth all the work.

In just a few brief moments that night, I suddenly understand the deep chasm left in these young men’s lives, the sudden emptiness in their hearts, and I felt sadness for a loss that I could never truly comprehend.

My stepson was fortunate – he now plays college ball on Saturday so the «last game» has been delayed a bit. I still don’t share the same enthusiasm for weekend football marathons as my husband and his two sons – but at least I find it easier to understand their passion/obsession, and that goes a long ways towards a peaceful, happy weekend at home.

Of course, having more than one TV has also helped….

New Twist on the Deer Hunter Game When Coaching Youth Football

As many of you know I’m a huge proponent of using unique movements and games to help me determine who should play what positions as well as help the athletic development and conditioning of my players. One of the best games for doing this is the Deer Hunter game. Last weekend at my Coaches Clinic in Boston, a youth coach that has used the «Winning Youth Football» system shared with me his twist on my version of this game.

Why We Do It

Remember in football what we are looking for is a players ability to control his body, change direction and accelerate in very small spaces. The key component in doing well with this skill set is core strength, the power one has from below the rib cage through the upper thighs. Your best FOOTBALL athletes are always have a very strong core.

How We Do It

The way we do our Deer Hunter it is mark out a 20 yard by 20 yard square with cones or shells. With a 24 player team put 4 «Hunters» in the middle of the square, put yellow shell jerseys on them to signify to everyone that they are the Hunters. The remaining players are the deer, the deer spread out across the square, roaming freely. Each hunter has a soft nerf ball, any will do. On your count the game begins and the deer scatter. The hunters throw the nerf balls at the deer, to take the deer out of the game. Once hit the deer go get a quick drink and sit until this quick game is over and we start a new one. In most cases the hunters chase down the deer and get at very close range to knock the deer out with the ball. Only the hunters are allowed to throw the balls.

Hidden Conditioning

As you might have guessed, everyone gets winded very quickly doing what? Very short stop and go change of direction runs. Sounds like anything we do in football? In very short order you will be able to determine which players can change direction and accelerate, which players have body control and which don’t. At the end of the game when you have the 4 hunters chasing down the one remaining deer, you will see some of the most amazing football moves known to man. In addition to you being able to see who your athletes are very quickly, the kids get some great conditioning in AND have a great time doing it. They will breathlessly beg you for more of this game. When was the last time your kids begged for more conditioning?

New Twist

What my Boston friend added to this game was he put a bucket of cold water in the middle of the circle. The hunters were allowed to soak the nerf balls into the cold water for added fun effect. I asked this coach to e-mail me so I could attribute him in this post, but 10 days later and no e-mail yet. Thanks coach, great idea.

Added Benefits

We like to use this game at the end of the first practice. Not only does it help us determine positions but it gets the kids excited about being at practice more than a bunch of 30 yard sprints. But of course we are getting just as much conditioning in as with the guys doing gassers, it’s just that our kids are loving it. Don’t even get me started on how much the parents love it too. When you are coaching youth football you want them on your side as well.

You can do this game without the nerf balls, just play it as tag.
