Old Oaken Bucket Trophy Football Game – Indiana University Hoosiers & Purdue University Boilermakers

There are many odd traditions in college football and the sort of things that make casual fans scratch their heads in bewilderment are in many instances the exact same things that make extremely zealous fanatical fans love their favorite past time even more. One of the more odd traditions in college football is that the annual in state rivalry football game between Indiana University (located in Bloomington, IN) and Purdue University (located in West Lafayette, IN) has for decades been played for a rather unique trophy titled the Old Oaken Bucket.

To understand the rationale behind the unique title of this head to head match up the historical origin of the term must first be understood. The traveling trophy known as the Old Oaken Bucket actually dates back to the 1920s and is one of the oldest football trophies in existence. The concept for the trophy that is now battled for by two Big Ten Conference rivals was first thought of in a 1925 alumni meeting in Chicago. Both Hoosiers and Boilermakers alumni gathered to discuss the options of how to best commemorate the spirited rivalry between the two schools which are only located less than 115 miles apart.

The odd specific phrase oaken bucket is jointly credited to both Dr. Clarence Jones (an Indiana alum) and Russel Gray (a Purdue alum). The language in the resolution passed at a subsequent 1925 joint alumni meeting in Chicago and essentially stated that an «old oaken bucket» (oaken simply means made of oak wood) would be best because it was believed to be «the most typical Hoosier form of trophy.» In this specific instance the word Hoosier was not referring specifically to the Indiana University Hoosiers but rather to all Indiana citizens who are collectively known as Hoosiers. This would of course include the Purdue students and alumni who also fell under the umbrella of Hoosiers. In fact the state nickname of Indiana is the Hoosier State.

The origin and inspiration for the phrase old oaken bucket actually predates the 1925 joint alumni meetings between Purdue and Indiana by about one hundred years. Dr. Jones and Mr. Gray chose the term old oaken bucket in part because it is the title of a now famous poem that poet Samuel Woodworth wrote in 1817. Although Woodworth was an American from the eastern seaboard (Massachusetts) and not Indiana the eloquent words that he penned about the endearing memories he had for where he grew up were sentiments many Indiana natives could relate to.

Amusingly, the first game in this epic series ended in a 0-0 tie in 1925. Since then Purdue leads the Old Oaken Bucket series with a record of 56-23-3 against the Indiana University (IU) Hoosiers.

¡XAVI ESTÁ SORPRENDIDO POR LOS ENTRENAMIENTOS DEL BARCELONA BAJO EL MANDO DE KOEMAN ¡REVOLUCIÓN XAVI

Xavi conmocionado por la condición del Barcelona
Diario AS, Sport, Fabrizio Romano, Esport3

Navigating Through the Fantasy Football Playoffs

1. Continue to Play the Waiver Wire

Unlike the regular season, the action of the waiver wire in fantasy does not stop after Week 13. You need to keep plugging away during the playoffs to give your team the best possible chance of winning the upcoming match-up. While most of the time the stars off of waivers are long gone due to their emergence earlier in the season, there are still some difference makers that are sitting on the wire that have a good chance to break out given the opportunity share. Look for players that are filling in for injured stars such as back up running backs or hot shot rookies that have been for some reason been eased along as the season has gone on but the coaches are ready to take the training wheels off as the NFL regular season is reaching its climax. Never rest because it could cost you a victory in the fantasy football playoffs and it is win or go home. In 2015, my friend picked up David Johnson of the Arizona Cardinals the Wednesday before Week 15 in the season. For most leagues including ours, this week is the semifinals to decide who gets to play in the fantasy league championship. Only 4 teams remain at this point so every mistake or success is magnified. Going back to Johnson, the Arizona running back ended up scoring well over 40 points to give my friend victory from the jaws of defeat as he was projected to lose by more than 30 before David Johnson’s game. It is a reminder that the waiver wire always continues long after the regular season concludes.

2. Look at the Match-ups

Setting lineups is usually a seamless activity, but it can be head scratching a couple of weeks and that includes weeks in the fantasy football playoffs. Sometimes, you might have two players that are neck in neck between each other in skill. That is when you have to do a little research like for a project in business. The research in this case is to look at the opponents that those players are facing for the week. The fantasy site has rankings for how those opponents have fared against those players’ positions such as running backs and wide receivers. After determining the match-up to see if it is a strong, middling, or weak opponent, you can then make an educated guess to see which one you are starting over the other. Usually, the right move pans out but sometimes it does not go your way and you could have a situation where benching the wrong player could cost you a victory like in my case when I was playing for the fantasy championship in 2016. That leads me into my final key topic of how to navigate through these playoffs.

3. Luck

At the end of the day, sometimes (in fact all of the time) you need good luck to go your way to win a fantasy championship. The old adage «it is better to be lucky than good» really applies to a win or go home situation like the playoffs. Your team could be strong for the whole season, making all of the right moves but then a bad week happens and suddenly your dream team is eliminated. That’s the cold truth about fantasy football. Sometimes, you just need some luck to break your way so that you can win that elusive title. The underlying point of this final key aspect is to just have fun, you cannot control how well your team performs on a given Sunday. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn’t but be prepared for either scenario so that you can maximize your experience of playing in the playoffs.

The playoffs are a fun and exciting time to be in. Sometimes, playing in the playoffs is like navigating through a storm that is hard to come out of. Hopefully these tips will give you a better shot at winning a fantasy title as that is what we are all seeking for when playing fantasy football.

Thanksgiving Football

Fun and games are always an inevitable part of entertainment for the young and the old alike. People in America celebrate this festival of charitable giving through their avid participation in the game of football that brings in waves of sheer joy and pleasure in the hearts of multitudes of fanatic football fans who are driven mad by football mania during this festive season. Over the years, football has become synonymous with this joyous festival of Thanksgiving.

Many interesting traditions permeate deep into the festival of Thanksgiving such as the game of football compliments this festival of merrymaking. Professional football was the last of the contemporary trends of celebrating the spirit of Thanksgiving. In 1874, eleven years after Lincoln’s proclamation, the first intercollegiate football game was played. Two year later the Intercollegiate Football Association was formed in the northeast, which instituted a championship game principally to amuse the people on Thanksgiving Day. Every year, strong competitors like Princeton and Yale would vie with each other to bag the most coveted winner’s trophy. Players, students and fans would wear their school colors as a mark of representation with banners flying high from carriages, hotels and business establishments of New York City. On Thanksgiving Day church services would wind up early to accommodate the fans, with the game kicking off the season of festivity for the social elite in New York. It had gained such popularity that soon by mid-1890s, 1,20,000 athletes from colleges, clubs and high schools partook in 5,000 Thanksgiving Day football games across the nation.

The custom of watching a match of football on Thanksgiving Day has evolved during the early decades of twentieth century. As football paved its way into the heart of the people winning hearts of millions, giving it a huge popularity as early as 1920s and 1930s and earning itself the much prestigious position that it enjoys at present, many people began to visit the football stadium to watch the same. Renowned teams playing for the world famous football league of America eventually established the tradition of playing nationally televised games on Thanksgiving afternoon. Besides the conventional competition organized by the nationally recognized football league in America, many high schools and colleges also organize «Turkey Day» football games over Thanksgiving weekend, often between regional or historic rival. However, Thanksgiving football played in schools and colleges of America, has now more or less faded into oblivion in most sections of the country with it being kept alive only in two franchise cities of this globally recognized football league of America, namely Detroit and Dallas, where Thanksgiving football is very much a way of life.

Thanksgiving football more often than not is associated with the team of Lions and a tradition that has been popular since 1934 in the city of Detroit. The game has been the idea of G.A. Richards, the first owner of the team with ferocious lion like quality players comprising the team. In fact four generations of Detroiters have been a proud part of the American celebration of Thanksgiving. Some 71 years later, fans residing in the state of Michigan have transformed a local event into an annual holiday event, giving it the shape of single greatest tradition in the history of American professional team sports. In fact no other team in professional sports can claim to be so much a part of an American holiday as that team with ferocious lion like players’ team with Thanksgiving. This team has hosted a game every Thanksgiving Day since 1934, with the exception of 1939-1944 due to World War II. The Dallas have also hosted football matches every Thanksgiving Day since 1966.

We thus find that it all saw its genesis in 1934 when a local radio executive, G.A. Richards, had purchased the Portsmouth (Ohio) Spartans and moved the team to Detroit, the Motor City. The Lions being nouveau arrive in town had taken a backseat to the Baseball Tigers in the sport pages. Richards had practical reasons for scheduling the game on Thanksgiving Day as he was also wise enough to figure out that the best way to give publicity to the team would be opting for the Thanksgiving Day contest for attracting the Motor City fans during the teams’ first season. The fierce clash between the Lions and the invincible World Champion, meaning the robust Bears of Chicago proved to be an all time classic. The Lions were exceptionally good with eight wins backing them, leading them to their entry alongside the Bears with a 10-1 record. But Chicago had even a better record holding a commanding position with 11 straight wins. The match then reached an interesting phase where a win in the sole fateful game would ensure whether the Lions will get the first-place tie with the Bears. Two weeks in advance of that fateful match, 26,000 tickets were sold out for the «Turkey Day» clash in the University of Detroit Stadium. Richards was not disheartened over the last two losses rather pretty content the way his team performed in its very first year. His faith and confidence in the team was well rewarded when Lions won the 1935 America’s popular football league Championship. The final match was scheduled on Thanksgiving Day when the Lions defeated the Bears 14-2 to bag the west Championship trophy. Radio with its huge publicity potential was used as a bait to capture the audience. Richards along with the nationally recognized broadcasting radio company, set up a 94-station network to broadcast the Lions-Bears showdown. Since then the league conventionally schedules two nationally televised games on Thanksgiving, usually featuring the famous football players of Dallas, one of the most successful and popular franchises in the sport and the players of Detroit, one of the least successful.

2006 will be the 87th season of globally acclaimed American football and is presumed to run from September 7 to New Year’s Eve, December 31. Three games have been ideally scheduled to be played on Thanksgiving Day. In addition to the traditional annual game between the world renowned American football players of Detroit and Dallas home games during that day, the Kansas City Chiefs who hosted games during their days in the football league of America, will relive that tradition in 2006 by hosting the players of Denver on Thanksgiving. All these games are scheduled to be broadcast in prime time.

Friends and family all over America usually prefer to huddle around their radio or TV sets to catch the live telecast of the match while munching on the special dishes prepared to commemorate Thanksgiving. Thus each Thanksgiving would actually revive the old, classic tradition of enjoying a match of football as a part of the celebration. Over decades, football and Thanksgiving has established a strong bond, leading to a high adrenaline rush.

The Origins of American Football

I love football. Every year I eagerly await the fall season not just for the cooler weather and the change of color on the leaves of the trees, but also because it means the start of the football season as well. Anticipation builds inside me at the thought of watching my team take the field once again and make a run for the top spot in their division.

I’ve been a fan of the game, and the same team, for decades. I have watched the players, the teams, and even the football industry evolve and change over time. American football has remained one of the most exciting and beautiful games in all of professional sports. For all its appeal, just how and where did American football originate? All sports have their beginnings and what I found out left me appreciating the game even more.

During the early 1800’s a popular game known as rugby, where a football is kicked at a goal and run over a line, had its beginnings at the famous Rugby Boy’s School in England. Around the same time in America, the emergence of a game called «ballown,» similar to Rugby, was played by a group of students from Princeton. East coast prep schools like Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth, and Rutgers College also competed in football-type games. At that time these early games resembled the more traditional «mob football» style played in England. The rules were simple with large numbers of players trying to advance the ball into a goal area usually by any means necessary. By 1855 manufactured inflatable balls were being used as football evolved into a kicking and running game.

Since there weren’t many rules established, violence and injury were common due to the roughness of the game. The increasing brutality of the game became such a public concern because of so many injuries and deaths, that some universities banned it. President Theodore Roosevelt even threatened to ban the game and urged Harvard, Princeton, and Yale to help make changes or lose the sport. Eventually the Intercollegiate Football Association was formed by representatives of Harvard, Columbia, and Princeton to establish a new code of rules mainly based on the rugby games.

The man responsible for shaping American football as we know it today was Walter Camp. He enrolled at Yale in 1876 and led the IFA’s rules committee. He proposed reducing the number of players from 15 to 11. He helped establish the line of scrimmage and the snap from center to quarterback. Camp also proposed that teams be required to advance the ball a minimum of five yards within three downs. More changes were instituted like the reduced size of the playing field, scoring rules, and game time. By 1887 a paid referee and an umpire were mandated for each game and tackling below the waist was allowed. In 1889 officials were given whistles and stopwatches. The forward pass, one of the most important changes in the game, didn’t become legal until 1906.

Although the rules were changing, football continued to be played violently in the style of the earlier mob games. Changes had to be made to make the game safer. These changes were discussed on December 28, 1905 by sixty-two schools who met in New York City. Eventually the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was formed as a result. Over a century later college football continues to thrive as one of the most popular collegiate games. After the demise of the IFA, the American Professional Football Association was formed in 1920. The association was later reorganized and in 1922 renamed the National Football League.

Nebraska Football Helmet – A History

Since the 1960’s, Nebraska has kept a very consistent football helmet design. They have always had a very conservative design; they have never had a flashy or unusual design, even for a special occasion like a Bowl Game. In 1960, Nebraska had a red helmet with a white stripe and the player’s number on the side (e.g. 22). In 1961, apparently the powers that be felt that even that design was too colorful and action-packed and instead opted for a white helmet with black numbers on the side. This Nebraska football helmet design is about as plain as you can get for a football helmet. In 1966, the numbers changed to red and a red vertical stripe appeared on the helmet for the first time. The white background and red stripe have never left the helmet since then.

The red numbers lasted just one regular season before they were dropped altogether. Rather than have the player’s number on the side of the helmet, the letters «NU», made their way to the helmet for the Sugar Bowl game in 1967 and remained for 2 full seasons. During the third season with this helmet design (1969), a «100» decal appeared on the front of the football helmet. It was football-shaped in blue with white numbers outlined in red. The «100» marked the 100 year anniversary of the chartering of University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

From 1970 to 1981, the Cornhuskers kept the exact same design. The helmet had a white background, a red vertical stripe, and the letter «N» replaced «NU». This football helmet looks very much like today’s design with one exception. In 1982, the team switched from the basic gray facemask to the red facemask. For almost 30 years, that same exact design has remained. The «N» is about as plain as you can get. It has no serifs and looks like your basic Arial font uppercase «N» that you could type on any word processing program. It probably fits well into the image of the program as a hard-working, Midwestern school, where they like to run the ball up the middle. In many ways it is the antithesis of some of the flashier designs out there at schools like Oregon, Maryland, and Boise State. There is not even a catchy logo like the Texas Longhorn or the Florida State spear. Looking at this football helmet, you can start to see why the cold weather, Rust Belt schools of the Big Ten were quick to admit the Cornhuskers for full conference membership in 2010.
